Applications of Engine Driven Pumps

Because engine driven pumps operate as their own power supply, they can be placed anywhere and are powerful and versatile. As a result, they’re a favourite of industries such as mining, construction and agriculture, or anywhere where a power supply cannot be easily accessed.

Whether it’s a diesel water pump for draining a pond or a waste pump for pumping slurry, engine driven pumps are a go-to for a huge range of applications.

Maintenance and Troubleshooting

Most engine driven pumps will be diesel-powered water pumps, but regardless of the specific application, as with all kinds of pumps, engine driven pumps require regular maintenance and upkeep to make sure they’re running at their best.

Preventative maintenance can drastically improve the lifespan of your pump, as well as sustain the efficiency of the engine. Some key routine tasks might include:

  • Checking engine fluid levels, ideally after every eight hours of engine operation. You may need to adjust oil and coolant types depending on the weather.
  • Check the fuel system. Look for any damaged or worn fuel lines, make sure the fuel filter isn’t worn out. Check that the fuel tank is clean and that it has fuel in it to avoid running your engine dry, particularly if it’s a diesel.
  • If your engine is liquid-cooled, make sure the coolant system has plenty of fluid and none of the components are worn or damaged. If it’s oil-cooled, ensure that the oil cooler is free from debris and that the engine always has plenty of oil.
  • Every so often, it will be necessary to carry out more thorough maintenance procedures such as oil changes, filter renewals, radiator flushes and coolant replacements, belt replacements etc. as well as checking over any electrical connections and fluid pipes/hoses.
  • It’s also important to ensure that the pumping components, such as the suction and discharge hoses, aren’t worn or damaged.

Safety Considerations in Engine Driven Pump Operation

We serve and cater to various sectors with reputable pumping solutions, ensuring our engine driven water pumps meet the specific needs of each industry.

  • Overheating – Make sure that your pump is not placed somewhere where it can overheat and damage itself or cause a fire hazard, like inside a warm environment, and ensure that coolant/oil levels are kept at optimum levels.
  • Exhaust fumes – As with all engines, engine driven pumps produce exhaust fumes. The pump should be somewhere with healthy ventilation while in operation. Exhaust fumes are dangerous for living things as well as the engine itself, as it relies on oxygen for combustion.
  • Lack of knowledge – If you’re going to be using an engine driven pump, make sure you know how the pump works (fuel, oil, coolant specifications and how to operate it), and the potential risks involved.
  • Maintenance – The engine and the pump sections of an engine driven pump will require regular maintenance to ensure they’re safe and aren’t leaking flammable fluids.
  • Refueling – When refuelling the engine, make sure it is switched off and cool. Never refill a running or hot engine, and safely deal with any fuel spills immediately.

Engine driven pumps also come with some regulatory procedures, such as making sure that you have a suitable place to store the fuel and other flammable fluids, as well as a place to safely dispose of used oil, coolant, and filters.

Have More Questions About our Diesel Engine Driven Pumps?

An engine-driven pump is effectively a water pump, powered by an integrated engine. The engines on these machines are typically petrol or diesel, however, continuous developments are underway on the success of solar power pumps.

Engine-driven pumps work just like any water pump, where the water is continuously pushed through the inlet pipe and discharged through the outlet pipe by a rotating impeller. What differs is the energy supply as they operate on fuel as opposed to electricity.

Our diesel engine-driven water pumps are all centrifugal, meaning water is pumped through using an outwards rotational force. We also supply both self-priming and manual pumps depending on your preferences.

There is no single answer when it comes to deciding if diesel-driven pumps are better than petrol-driven ones. There are pros and cons for each model, it just comes down to what factors you wish to prioritise and the intended use. Here are some general things to consider:

Petrol engines tend to be cheaper, both with their initial purchase and when buying fuel. However, diesel engines are more fuel-efficient, an advantage when using heavy-duty machinery for long periods. Although diesel engines are typically considered less harmful to the environment as they emit fewer CO2 emissions, they emit far more nitrogen oxide (NOx) which impacts both the air quality and the health of our lungs. As a result, it is always recommended and important to remember to wear the correct PPE when working with fuel-powered machinery.

With proper maintenance, diesel engines of all kinds can be very long-lived. So, your diesel-powered water pump should last you a good few years of solid use before you see any issues.

Engine driven water pumps use either petrol or diesel fuel. Petrol-powered water pumps will usually be cheaper to purchase and offer a wider choice, but diesel water pumps will be more fuel-efficient and will last longer. Diesel is also less flammable than petrol, and therefore safer to store than petrol.

The main advantage of diesel water pumps is their versatility and portability. Because they power themselves, they can be placed anywhere with good ventilation and away from flammable materials. They’re also relatively simple in mechanical terms and can be maintained in much the same way as vehicle engines which many people are already familiar with.

Diesel water pumps are a self-powered pumping solution for water and other fluids including slurry and worksite waste. They use a small diesel engine to power a pump, through which the given fluid is pumped, moving it from one place to another.

Diesel engines often use two fuel pumps – one to move the fuel out of the fuel tank and towards the engine, and a second, which operates off the camshaft, to pressurise the fuel injection system.
