Whereas slurry is a liquid that contains a high concentration of solids, sludge is a semi-solid slurry and a lot denser. ITo calculate the slurry flow rate, you need the total slurry volume (in gallons) and the pumping time (in minutes). This can then be inputted into this simple formula:
Total Volume of Slurry x Pumping Time = Flow Rate (GPM).
As a rough guide, the minimum or critical pipe velocity for slurry is 1.2 m/s. Any lower than this, then the slurry could begin to settle, and pumping becomes ineffective. Whereas the maximum pipe velocity should be no more than 2.1 m/s. Any speed higher than this can lead to excessive wearing of the pipe.
