If you need a trusted repair service, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch today.

Maintenance

With slurry pumps often subject to harsh conditions, frequent maintenance checks are crucial to expand the lifespan of your machine. The slurry can sometimes wear down the internal components, which if left untreated, can reduce the overall performance. As with most pieces of machinery this can be mitigated with frequent maintenance checks and inspections. If you feel your slurry pump is overdue for a maintenance check, then get in contact with the Pump and Plant team, who will be more than happy to book one in for you.

Slurry Pumps – FAQs

Water pumps are used to transfer water, be it clean water or wastewater. They are only equipped to deal with relatively low-viscosity liquids, meaning liquids with a low fluid strength. However, slurry pumps have been specifically engineered to pump harsher and high-solid content fluids. Although they can also be used to pump water, this is not their primary function.

Despite the terms sludge and slurry being used interchangeably, they are two different substances. Whereas slurry is a liquid that contains a high concentration of solids, sludge is a semi-solid slurry and a lot denser. As such, sludge pumps are capable of pumping substances with a high concentration of solid particles. Whilst in theory, sludge pumps are capable of pumping slurry, it is generally recommended to select the right pump for the job.

The size of the slurry pump required will depend on the job and individual factors, such as flow rate, liquid density and area size to name a few. Although they are heavy-duty machines, the capabilities vary across models. Consulting with a pumping expert, like our team at Pump and Plant, is recommended for proper sizing for the specific application. When purchasing a slurry pump from us, we work with you to calculate the best size for the job.

Slurry pumps are highly efficient at pumping varying densities of liquid over long distances. However, the distance that can be covered depends on the specific pump itself. Other factors like the solid content will also need to be considered.

As with any pump, the best type of valve is durable and designed to withstand harsh elements. This is even more important with slurry pumps, as the solid particles within fluids can erode the casing. Although this is dependent on the individual use and application, some suitable choices include knife gate valves, pinch valves, and diaphragm valves.

ITo calculate the slurry flow rate, you need the total slurry volume (in gallons) and the pumping time (in minutes). This can then be inputted into this simple formula:

Total Volume of Slurry x Pumping Time = Flow Rate (GPM).

As a rough guide, the minimum or critical pipe velocity for slurry is 1.2 m/s. Any lower than this, then the slurry could begin to settle, and pumping becomes ineffective. Whereas the maximum pipe velocity should be no more than 2.1 m/s. Any speed higher than this can lead to excessive wearing of the pipe.
